ICELANDIC
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF MINNESOTA - A Brief History
Founded in 1994, the Association offers a group for
men, women and families interested in Iceland to join and
participate. It promotes Icelandic tradition and culture as
well as fellowship among its members.
In addition to the annual Jólabarnaball for families in December and the 17th of June Picnic in June, the Association hosts a Thorrablót
each February, the month of Thorri. The gala banquet
features the traditional thorramatur (traditional Icelandic food), music, a program, and
fellowship. A wonderful time is always had by all who attend.
During the 4th week of each month, members gather
at family restaurants for dinner and fun at the Icelandic
Night Out.
Members of the Association were very active in
planning and implementing the international INL convention - Western Icelanders: Coming to America. - held in Minneapolis
April 19-21, 2002. Fifty speakers from both North
America and Iceland and 440 people participated in that highly
successful event. The Val Bjornson Scholarship for the
Exchange Program between the Universities of Minnesota and
Iceland has also greatly benefited from the Association's hard
work.
The Association is a Minnesota non-profit
corporation.
